HOW TO ADD MOTION TO A TURKEY DECOY

Natural Movement

Montana Turkey Decoys have natural movement in certain situations. While some turkey decoys on the market can potentially spin out of control if the wind is too high, our stake and elastic strap combo allow decoys to sway back and forth in the wind and always come to rest in the same place.

While wind can be a friend at times, it can also be a turkey hunter’s biggest enemy. Windy days will shut most birds up, making it extremely difficult to receive return calls and pin a turkey’s location. Wind can also have a negative effect on a decoy setup if the proper precautions aren’t in place. Strong gusts can knock a decoy to the ground, add too much decoy movement, and swing decoys in the wrong direction. On the flip side, decoys will remain stiff when no breeze is present and lose a bit of realism. Losing control over turkey decoys is never a good thing. To combat this, manually control your decoy movement.

Manual Movement

The weather nevers does what we expect. When we simply want a light breeze, the wind is howling or completely dead. You can adjust to these wind conditions and appeal to a turkey with controlled motion. Adding and limiting motion depending on a Gobbler’s location and response can be a deadly. Before going out and purchasing a motorized turkey decoy or trying to rig up a fancy contraption, consider simply buying a cheap spool of fishing line. Most turkey decoys can be pulled and spun in whatever direction you want with a little help from some clear monofilament.

The following setup will help you add more motion and also give you the ability to face a turkey with your decoy. The basic process involves tying off one end of fishing line to your decoy’s beard or tail and running the line back to your spot.

Once you run the line back to your blind, you have the ability to pull on the line to face your decoy in a specific direction or simply add more movement. In the following video, we substituted fishing line with rope for a clearer visual.
